Law Student Hacked To Death By Cousin In Tamil Nadu Following Marriage Proposal Dispute

Sivaganga: A 29-year-old law student was allegedly hacked to death with a machete on Sunday in Tamil Nadu’s Sivaganga district following a violent dispute over a marriage proposal.

Police arrested the victim’s cousin Murugesan (50) and the latter’s 19-year-old son, Arunraja, in connection with the killing. “Both suspects were injured during the altercation and remain under police custody at the Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital,” they said.

Giving details, investigators said the victim, Sivabalan of Chinna Pudukottai, had repeatedly insisted on marrying Murugesan’s daughter. The woman’s family strongly opposed the proposal, leading to a prolonged dispute.

“A case had already been registered over the dispute at the Manamadurai police station, but the dispute turned violent on Sunday, leading to the murder,” said police.

The conflict escalated when Sivabalan confronted Arunraja, and during the argument, Sivabalan allegedly threatened him with a sword, drawing the family’s fury.

“Murugesan was enraged over the fight and went to question Sivabalan. The argument turned violent, and he attacked Sivabalan with a machete, causing him to bleed to death on the spot,” said Sivaganga District Superintendent of Police Abhishek.

Manamadurai police officers recovered the body and shifted it to the government medical college hospital for an autopsy.

“We are conducting a probe into the incident and have arrested both Murugesan and his son Arunraja. The exact cause of the murder and the manner in which the incident took place will be clear when the probe is complete,” he said.
