Baltasar Kormákur's latest directorial Apex is not just an action-thriller survival drama. It is a test of the body and mind. Led by the commendable Charlize Theron as Sasha, from the very first frame the film throws us into extreme nature and even more dangerous human behaviour. The ending of this 95-minute-long nail-biter is less about who wins and more about what survival costs.

Sasha is an avid climber who thrives on danger. We see this in the splendid opening on the Troll Wall (Europe's tallest vertical rock face and one of Norway's most dramatic natural landmarks). Her bond with Tommy (Eric Bana) who is also an outdoor enthusiast, feels strong. But the two are hit by tragedy early.

Months later, we see her return. This time her journey seems to be not for thrills. She goes kayaking into the river roaring with intense ripples. Paddling through highly turbulent areas, she reaches the bank where she lays her tent, only to get up in the morning realising her belongings are stolen.

The search brings him to Ben, played by Taron Egerton. This is their second meeting. When they first meet, Ben seems helpful and suggests to her a secret camping spot. But warning signs are there, which Sasha chooses to ignore and goes ahead.

Soon the truth comes out that Ben is a predator who hunts humans. What was meant to be a peaceful trip turns into a brutal chase for Sasha. The biggest shift comes when Sasha stops being prey and becomes a hunter herself.

At first, Ben controls the narrative because he knows the terrain well. He sets traps and takes sadistic pleasure in torturing Sasha. But slowly she adapts and by the climax the inevitable power flip brings emotional release. Ben is no longer in control of the very “game” that he started. Sasha uses nature against him. The same environment that helped Ben now traps him.

Few early hints in the film add to the anticipation

  • The opening climb is not random. It shows Sasha’s mindset and that same thinking returns later.
  • The ranger warning about missing people is a clear red flag.
  • Ben’s charm feels off from the start. Too smooth. Too interested.
  • Nature is not villain here. It is neutral. It tests everyone equally.
  • We perceive nature as unpredictable, but here the real danger is human cruelty.
  • The film also shows pain as transformation. Sasha suffers, but her suffering rebuilds her.

The Apex ending is not a happy ending. Rather, it is a survival ending wherein Sasha wins but she is not the same person anymore. Her survival is definitely the highest note of the graph. But how she makes it to the other end is what makes Apex an edge-of-your-seat watch. It is embedded with set pieces designed for an adrenaline rush unfolding in the magnificent vastness of nature.

Also, Sasha’s grief is the key here. She is already broken, but that makes her both vulnerable and fearless. Her final state suggests acceptance as she prepares to let go of trauma and guilt. She cannot escape danger or her past. But she can face it. In a way, Sasha reaches her “apex.” Not as a climber but as someone who survives to tell her story.
