New Delhi: The Centre on Wednesday extended the tenure of Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan by one year, signalling its confidence in the senior bureaucrat overseeing India’s internal security and disaster management framework. The extension comes days after the national capital marked a massive student protest spearheaded by Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) demanding education reforms.
The extension was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Govind Mohan will continue in office beyond August 22, 2026, until August 22, 2027. The extension has been granted by relaxing the provisions of Fundamental Rule (FR) 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet also approved a one-year extension for Cabinet Secretary Dr TV Somanathan, ensuring continuity in the government’s top administrative leadership.
A 1989-batch IAS officer of the Sikkim cadre, Mohan took charge as Union Home Secretary in August 2024 after serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Culture. Over the past two years, Mohan has overseen several key initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s internal security architecture, border management and disaster preparedness.
Mohan also played a crucial role in policymaking as far as India’s fight against naxals and the drug menace are concerned.
During Mohan’s tenure, the Ministry of Home Affairs intensified efforts to modernise Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) through enhanced surveillance systems, advanced communication networks, modern weaponry and mobility platforms. The government has repeatedly stated that these reforms have significantly improved the operational capability of CAPFs in border guarding, counter-insurgency operations, anti-Naxal campaigns and other internal security duties.
Mohan has also played an important role in coordinating the Centre’s response to natural disasters. Under his leadership, the MHA ensured faster deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams during floods, cyclones and landslides across several states. The ministry strengthened coordination with state governments, the armed forces and central agencies to improve disaster preparedness and relief operations, particularly during recurring floods in the Northeast and other vulnerable regions.
The senior bureaucrat has also been closely associated with the government’s drive to tackle emerging security threats, including cybercrime, terrorism, organised crime and cross-border drug trafficking. The ministry expanded technology-led policing initiatives, strengthened intelligence sharing among agencies and promoted greater use of digital platforms for crime detection and investigation.
The Home Ministry under his stewardship also focused on improving coordination with states through regular review meetings on law and order, disaster management and internal security.
