New Delhi: What could be dubbed as a major security breach at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, a British national who arrived from Bangkok allegedly fled the immigration area and escaped into the city, police said on Friday.

Police said the incident occurred on October 28, prompted a massive search operation which has not bear fruit yet.

They identified the passenger as Fitz Patrick, a British citizen.

Steps were in place to deport Patrick to the United Kingdom via Thailand. He managed to duck the authorities after landing in Delhi. Police suspect he escaped from the immigration area and left the airport premises before being formally processed for deportation.

"A security lapse was reported at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport after a British national, who was to be deported to the UK via Thailand, escaped from the immigration area and entered the city. Delhi Police and security agencies have launched a search operation and filed an FIR while questioning airline staff," PTI wrote quoting a senior police officer said.

The airport security is vested with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Along with the CISF, the Bureau of Immigration and Delhi Police, are in the process of locating in the fugitive and process him out as per law.

Officials also said they were poring over the airport CCTV footage "to determine the sequence of events and identify possible lapses that led to the escape."

Delhi police have registered a case under relevant sections. They have also deployed teams "to search for possible hideouts and exit points in the National Capital Region (NCR)." Police are also in the process of establishing the passenger's motive in entering into the national capital.
