Badaun: People at the court complex here in Uttar Pradesh witnessed a rare scene unfold when two young women, both best friends for years, exchanged garlands at a Shiva temple inside the court premises on Tuesday. Prime reason, they said, for taking such step is they "don't want men".

"We were told our (same sex) marriage will not be legally recognised. So we made a promise to each other - if we cannot get married legally, we will spend rest of our lives together as husband and wife," the couple said. "We went ahead with this decision because both of us don't want to be with men. Both of us have accepted each other for a happy life ahead," they added.

This morning, both the women reached the chamber of Advocate Diwakar Verma in Badaun Collectorate premises, and expressed their desire to marry each other. They informed him that both of them are best friends and have been living together for the last three months. When they said they want to live together as husband and wife after a legal wedding, Verma clarified that their marriage could not be legally recognised.

Both of them then exchanged garlands at the Shiva temple located in the Collectorate, and vowed to be with each other for the rest of their lives. "We don't want men, which is why we decided to stay together. If our family members accept us, well and good; else we will stay away from them and cut all ties with them," the same-sex couple said.

Advocate Diwakar Verma said that both the girls came to him expressing their desire to get married. They even told him that they dislike men in the society, as they were allegedly ill-treated by several men in the past.
