Hosur: A tragic case from Hosur has drawn attention to the dangers of untreated dog bites and the growing stray dog problem in Tamil Nadu. Edwin Brian, a 23-year-old MBA graduate from Thinnur village near Hosur, died of rabies after being bitten by a stray dog. This happened after he chose to ignore the dog bite and not get treated immediately.
Having recently completed his MBA from a Hosur college, Edwin was working at a private company near Thalli. According to his family, he was bitten by a dog a few days back, but had not sought medical help and neither had he informed anyone.
On Wednesday afternoon, he began showing signs of distress and erratic behaviour, including spitting and shouting. Alarmed by this, his family rushed him to the local Primary Health Centre in Kakkadasam.
Though the doctors there treated him initially, his condition worsened, prompting them to shift him to a private hospital in Thalli.
The attending doctors suspected rabies, and Edwin was immediately taken to the government hospital in Thally, where he was given a rabies vaccine. Later that night, he was shifted to the Hosur District Government Hospital for further care.
However, despite all the medical efforts, Edwin passed away hours later, leaving his family and friends inconsolable.
Health officials reiterated that any dog bite, especially from a stray, requires immediate medical attention. “Whether it’s a bite or just saliva coming in contact with a wound, anti-rabies vaccination must be taken without delay,” one official said.
In recent months, the issue of stray dog attacks has grown more serious in parts of Tamil Nadu, with multiple cases involving children and pedestrians reported. Videos of such incidents often go viral, but effective response from local bodies has been inconsistent.
