STORYLINE:
The acting president of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's Students' Union on Saturday spoke about the fears and hopes of a small group of protesters who refused to leave Polytechnic University, which has been ringed by police for days.
Woo Kwok Wang said that the protesters were "fearing they can't escape" arrest and being charged with rioting, which carries a sentence of up to ten years in prison.
He said that while "one man staying inside (prison) for 10 years in exchange for 7 million people forever having freedom" might be "worth it", no one should have to face imprisonment "because they fight for freedom".
Protesters on campus are struggling with their ideals of fighting on, dwindling hopes of somehow making an escape and grim conditions in the debris-strewn campus.
Wang said he's been inside the campus for over a week and he can see that the few protesters still inside have found their hiding places and are staying put, unwilling to meet visiting social workers and other mediators trying to persuade them to come out.
Police formed a cordon around the university last Sunday after violent clashes that ran throughout the day.
On Monday when crowds of protesters tried to make a break for it out of the main entrance, police beat them back with tear gas and batons, arresting as many as they could.
Since then, the situation has settled down into a stalemate, with police surrounding the university, some daring escape attempts by protesters, and a trickle coming out to give themselves up.
Police announced last week that those aged below 18 years old would not be arrested immediately if they came out, but those above 18 would be arrested.
Protesters are demanding direct elections for Hong Kong’s leader and legislators, and an investigation into alleged police brutality.
