"(They) were ambushed by a cartel. We don't know if it was, they were targeted or they're just caught in the crossfire of kind of a war over territory between two cartels. We don't really know a whole lot of the specifics. We just know that so far, that nine are dead. Nine of our family members."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Austin Cloes, victims' relative:
"For sure, they had, they are US citizens and they've just settled down there. It's really peaceful, for the most part down there, but in certain instances they, they know that this is kind of a lawless area where they deal with these sort of things and so it can be scary if there's no justice like there currently is down there."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Austin Cloes, victims' relative:
"I don't know if Christina in her last moments of life saved her daughter by laying her down on the floorboard, because that's where they found her. They found her on the floor of the SUV, but they later found her bloody but, but alive when they initially thought that she was, she was deceased."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Austin Cloes, relative:
"I'm very grateful that the President and Sen. Romney and the media have reached out to the family and have been able to give it coverage because it deserves the coverage. I mean, this sort of thing shouldn't go unnoticed and these sort of people shouldn't just be buried without their names being put out there. These are great people. These are US citizens. These are people that, that  are really good people."

STORYLINE:
Drug cartel gunmen ambushed three SUVs along a dirt road, slaughtering at least six children and three women — all of them U.S. citizens living in northern Mexico — in a grisly attack that left one vehicle a burned-out, bullet-riddled hulk, authorities said Tuesday.
The dead included 8-month-old twins. Eight children were found alive after escaping from the vehicles and hiding in the brush, but at least five had bullet wounds or other injuries and were taken to Tucson for treatment.
Leah Staddon, of Queen Creek, Arizona, is related to several of the people who were killed. She told KGUN-TV that her sister heard the gunshots and saw smoke from the burning vehicle from her home in Mexico. She said family members have previously been pulled over by people carrying guns. She called the deaths "horrific."
The attackers apparently killed one woman, Christina Langford Johnson, after she jumped out of her vehicle and waved her hands to show she wasn't a threat, according to an account published by family members and corroborated by prosecutors and a relative in a telephone interview.
Another relative, Austin Cloes, says Johnson may have saved her infant daughter by placing her on the floor of the SUV.
Around the ambush scene, which stretched for miles, investigators found over 200 shell casings, mostly from assault rifles.
The attack took place Monday in a remote, mountainous area in northern Mexico where the Sinaloa cartel has been engaged in a turf war. The victims had set out to see relatives in Mexico; one woman was headed to the airport in Phoenix to meet her husband
